There’s only so much time you can spend in an air-conditioned dwelling. Every now and then, you need to rough it. Venture forth into the heated outdoors to cut the grass, take your pooch for a walk, or get in some outdoor exercise.
When the chores and activities are done, is stepping back inside your air conditioned home the only way to enjoy cooling temperatures? Nope, and not by a long shot.
Here are some tried and true tips for keeping extra cool this and every summer.
Drink Plenty of Water
Upping your water intake is a great way to reduce your body’s core temperature. Cool foods like fruits and vegetables help, too.
Keep the Fans Running
Table or floor fans don’t cool you off the AC way. Instead, they keep air moving over your skin. That helps your sweat evaporate which makes you feel cool.
Install a Whole-house Fan
This is a great way to take some pressure off your central AC system without sacrificing an ounce of comfort. At night, once the outdoor temperature is at or below the temp indoors, shut off the AC system, throw open the windows, and let your whole-house fan take over. Less wear and tear on you AC system means fewer repairs and longer equipment life.
Open and Shut Case
During the day, keep your window treatments closed, especially over windows that receive direct sunlight. That helps keep heat out which further minimizes AC system wear.
Let it Flow
Before heading outdoors, clothe yourself in loose-fitting natural fibers – like cotton and linen – to enable air to flow across your body.
Hats Off
It’s a mistake to think a baseball cap will keep your head cool in the summer. During the winter months, for example, people wear hats to prevent heat from escaping their bodies. In the summer, you want the air to escape. So, if you must wear a hat, turn to straw.
All these helpful tips aside, summer living is so much more refreshing with a fully functional central AC system.
