Do you find yourself layering up in hoodies and sweatpants in one room and stripping down to a t-shirt and shorts in another? This may be expected if those rooms are controlled by different thermostats and set degrees apart. But what if your entire home is controlled by a single thermostat? If something even close to that is going on in your house, you don’t have to grin and bear it. Uneven indoor temps are not only annoying, they can signal problems with your heating or cooling system.
Here are the most common reasons for uneven temperatures from one room to the next:
Poorly Sized System
An HVAC system that’s either too big or too small is an energy hog. If it’s undersized, it simply can’t heat or cool your home effectively, and some areas of your home are bound to be affected more than others. On the other hand, an oversized system will cycle on and off frequently, producing hot and cold spots while shortening the equipment’s lifespan.
Faulty Ductwork
Your air ducts are vital components of your HVAC system. If they develop cracks, gaps, or were not installed correctly, uneven temperatures often can result right along with higher heating and cooling costs.
Not Enough Registers
A standard 12’ x 12’ room may require only one vent. However, a 12’ x 12’ room with vaulted ceilings may require two or more registers. In addition to quantity, their placement is equally important to properly heating or cooling a room. If a room has too few, too many, or poorly placed registers, it’s bound to create a comfort imbalance.
Inadequate Insulation
Proper insulation serves to keep our homes warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Over time, however, insulation breaks down, thus lessening heating and cooling efficiency. Make sure your attic floor is covered with up to 6” of insulation. Check other areas of your home where conditioned air could be escaping, like around windows and exterior doors, light switches and outlets, and so on, and caulk or seal them if necessary.
