May is a great month – the flowers are blooming, birds are chirping and no matter what Mother Nature is doing outside, we can anticipate those warm, sunny days of summer just around the corner.
And while you and your family might be ready to slather on the sunscreen and stick your toes in the sand, your home’s air conditioning system might be singing a different tune. A sad song, perhaps, like “The Party’s Over”? Even if it were, how would you know? That’s not as difficult as you might think – just be on the lookout for these warning signs that your central AC system can benefit from the professional troubleshooting services of Air Professionals:
Unusual or Excessive Noise – It’s normal to hear some noise from your AC system, especially as it cycles on and off or you happen to be outdoors in the vicinity of your condensing unit. However, if you notice rattling, banging, grinding or any other unusual sounds, something’s wrong, and that something is not going to get better on its own.
Unusual Cycling Patterns – Central air conditioning systems run on a pretty predictable pattern – they run for a certain amount of time, then take a break also of a certain duration. But if your system is constantly turning on and off, or rarely turning off at all, it could be improperly sized for your home and thus overburdened. This could result in improper cooling and unusually high energy bills.
High Humidity Levels – A properly sized and well-functioning air conditioning system also helps to control indoor humidity levels. But all is not well should you start noticing condensation on windows, spots of unexplained mold or mildew, or having to adjust the thermostat to a lower than normal temp.
Poor Air Quality – Your air conditioner does more than keep you cool as a cucumber in the sweltering heat – it also helps to clean the air inside your home or, at least, prevent it from becoming any dirtier. That’s why it’s so important to have your system professionally cleaned and inspected once a year and, in the meantime, to clean or replace your filter every 30 – 60 days.
Uneven Cooling from Room to Room – Take a walk around your home during system operation. Is the bedroom much cooler than the living room? Does the guest room feel like a walk-in freezer while the rest of the house is sweltering? That’s not how it’s supposed to be, and hopefully not how things were when your system was first installed.
